I realize that I might have to spend some money to earn some money. But, why should I spend money unnecessiarily if I don't have to. How can it be said that all the information contained within the journal is copyrighted when most or all of it is a matter of public record (family bible records, census, newspaper obits, old court house records, etc.). I do not want to use the editors actual written words, which is usually just the first page and does not contain anything of interest. The info is usable, the compiilations is probably protected if registered. Copyright infringers usually come up very short in the courts if they are caught. : You can freely use all the information that you get out of those Magazines. The copyright if there is one protects the "compilation". Thus a reproduction of what is compiled, is a likely infringement. There is a question in my mind that if you copy the "public Record" from the book, that may be an infrimgement. The information is available to you. The talk about money was meant to mean that if you were to pay for the copyright search, the chanes are goo there is no copyright in which case you are home free. Any more advice I'm going to have to start charging for my time. : M.
