.net vs .com problems

: Recently I acquired www.republikmusic.net and have begun development on a web site for my music production business. Days after the .net address was registered someone registered www.republikmusic.com and begun development of a completely disconnected site, but also in the business of music production. Both of our sites have yet to be completed, but I fear people looking for our site will be confused and might end up at the .com site, a much less professional site. Would this be the time to place a trademark or copyright on our name (Republik Music). What can I do, legally, to protect all the work I have been doing from being confused with this other site?
