: : I read another message about copywriting songs but I was wondering about poems. I have a few that I would like to make sure that they stay mine and someone doesnt copy what I wrote. I entered one in a contest online. Is it automaticly copywrited? Any info would be helpful. Thank you

Der Stacy,
The copyright law covers what you create. I believe a copyright can be registered from up to 95 years from the creation.

Copyright registration enables enforcement. It is not in itself expensive but contiual registrations can be bothersome and add up.

Proof of what has been created may bea able to overcome questions as to true authorship, if that is in doubt.

I had a very clever client, mail a work to a friend by ceertified mail in a sealed envelope and then the client retreived the sealed envelope and kept is as evidence, in the evnent there was a problem.

Copyright has to be understood in terms of the work. It must be fully understood, it only protects the mode of expression. Not the idea.

If you have and idea for a play, movie or tv program. Protecting that goes well beyond the copyright law.
