: : : Please help! Recently I started making vintage mirrors with collages around the frame. Most of the pictures are from the picture library in Manhattan and I make color copies of them. Alot of the pictures do not say what book or source they are from. I also have some pages from old French books that I use. Is there a certain age that a picture can be before the copywright law no longer applies? Am I breaking the law using reproductions of old pictures from the picture library? What if the publishing house is out of business? Thanks for your help!
: : Dear Heather Hubbard,
: : You are to be commended for your caution. The Register of Copyrights has a notice that all works prior to 1923 are public domain. Leave it to the law though. Reproductions are contemporaneously registerable under the copyright law.
