Copyrighted Music in Wedding Videos[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Copyright Forum ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Jason James on December 15, 2002 at 22:06:38: I make wedding videos and photo montages. My clients are always requesting copyrighted music on their tapes and DVDs. Clients rarely order more than 10 copies. Certainly, it's a copyright infringment to simply copy a copyrighted work to their wedding video or montage. However, these videos are for private use and not for performance. If I purchased copies of the music, on a one for one basis (for example - I make 5 tapes and purchase 5 copies of the music), and transfer that music to my clients videos, would that be an infringement? Do you think syncronization or mechanical reproduction rights would apply to such a limited use? From an ethical standpoint, I don't see any infringement because the artist/label is getting paid. Getting individual licenses from ASCAP or BMI for 5 copies of a wedding video would be impractical.
