Mr. Auslander responded to Jan Kent in May 2001 that he thought it would be all right to go ahead and put her previously published columns in a book that she would self-publish. Since she was paid for the columns, isn't this considered a work for hire and therefore the copyright would belong to the publisher, the newspaper? I have a similar question about columns I wrote for a newspaper where I was the editor. I want to be able to either anthologize them (i.e., a book) or to submit them for syndication, but I am not sure whether I should ask the publisher, my former employer, to release the rights or whether I already hold them. The work was completed on my own equipment and my own time, not on company time or compters, but I don't know how I could prove that.
