: I'm developing a software program that will allow a user to graphically build an electrical distribution system based on requirements from the National Electrical Code (ANSI NFPA 70). Although I will not quote directly from the Code, the program will reference sections of the code by name and section number within compliance reports, and by necessity use engineering data (such as conductor ampacities, etc) from code tables to do the compilations.
: In effect, the program becomes an interactive Code design application.
: As long as I refrain from copying sections word-for-word, am I safe from infringement?
Without taking any professional responsibility my gut says its ok. It seems on the edge of risk. The use of factual compilations seems in your favor. There are cases on telephine books where the data is available the copying is an infrigment. There may be a patent in what you are doing.
