: Dear Mr. Holmberg,
: One could write a book to answer your question. It is easy to avoid copyright and trademark infringement if you understand the law.

Heh, that's what I thought... But let's put it like this: I suppose the fangame cretors could get away easilly by modifying copyrighted names and characters a little, but if they insisted on NOT doing this, keeping these names even if the company with the copyrights tells them that they cannot do that, is it still legal at all? Some people claim that if they make a game (I guess this would also apply to books, movies, plays etc.) that is totally an original creation by themselves, featuring a story, music, art etc. etc. that are completely a work of their own, then adding minor copyrighted details like character- and location names from the original creation wouldn't count as enough to make the product in itself a copyright infringement. I guess there is a big gray-zone where to set the limit here depending on the specific case, but can one say anything useful generally about this, like stating what DEFINATELY would count the entire work a copyright infringement???
