Using a "spirit" song from a high school for an elementary school

: My high school had a great spirit song that was written in the 1930's. I would like to use the music and a slight variation of the words for the elementary school where I teach. We will sing and play it at school events - not for profit. Can we do this? I've contacted the principal and the band director at the high school and they said they didn't have a problem with us using it, but they didn't know about the legal/copywrite issues. Do we have to have anything other than permission from these two gentlemen in order to teach it to our children (grades preschool-8th grade)?
