: : : : I'm from Puerto Rico and there's this musical genre called "reggeaton". They have been using samples for a while. They are not derivate works. They are not shorter than 15 sec. They almost sound exactly like the original instrumental apart from a drum loop and a guy rapping like a jamaican "dancehall artist". : : What can I really do? Send recorded tapes to the artist's label? I'm not sure if I can do anything. : : Thank You : Dear Jay Cruz, : The tough part is to find someone that will even listen. : M. Arthur Auslander : Auslander & Thomas-Intellectual Property Law Since 1909 It's not my work. It's these artist's work. They've been sampling music for a while and i bet that's it's totally illegal. I ask because recently they sampled "Bittersweet Symphony" from the Verve. This song has a sample from a Rolling Stones song from a symphonic song and they were sued. I mean, I never heard that these artis in my country, has had any trouble doing this and thats what surprises me about it. I'm really angry at this situation and I wan't to do something about it. They sampled "Sweet Dreams" from the Eurythmics, they have sample "Get your freak on" by Missy Elliot and a lot more popular songs. Again I ask: What can I do so they can get caught?
