You don't have to "publish" your poems before you register a copyright on them.
What is the point of worrying about copyright? If you have a publisher, the publisher takes care of the copyright. You should get paid a royalty for the publication.
If you self publish then the copyright should be registered and you will make money from the sale of the publlication.
