: A few friends and I are doing a math project. We are planning on using familiar music tunes and putting new words to them, all math related. We then want to tape ourselves singing the songs with our lyrics, but with out any music. Just our voices. Is this legal. Dear K Smith, The music is protected by copyright. A performance is protected by copyright. Your lyrics is protected by copyright, which can also be regisitered. If you vocalize the music with different words it still comes under the mucic coyright. If the music is released then you can either go to ASCAP BMI OR SECAC for a licence or there are other systems to pay. M. Arthur Auslander Auslander & Thomas-Intellectual Property Law Since 1909
