Do moderate digital changes to an illustration constitute infringement?

Let's say I am a graphic designer working for a non-profit community center. For my employer, I commission an illustrator to create a cartoon image of a knight on the back of a buffalo, to incorporate into a logo going onto the uniforms and office letterheads for a non-profit little league football team.

After receiving the artist's work, I photographed the image on my scanner and made the following changes using Adobe Photoshop:

-- deleted the light orange and black polka dot shading on the knight's cape (about 1/3 the size of the illustration) and filled with a solid, darker orange
-- subsituted gray for the green on the knights armor
-- deleted the black and white background images of other knights, and filled in a solid black
-- lengthened by an inch and added a silver point to an all-black "jousting spear"
-- deleted creator's name, signed in prominent letters with black ink on a light-colored area
-- added the name of the team in the background, "touching" the knight figure

After making these changes, would I get the copywright, or would the illustrator?

Please email response.
