redrawing public domain images...[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Copyright Forum ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Amy on March 10, 2002 at 16:25:23: I'm so glad I found this site! I am a home educating Mother of four, and have branched out into trying to provide resources for the homeschooling community. I am undergoing creating a large timeline that children would put on a wall. As they study different people/events in history, they would put a picture of it on the timeline. The pictures would only be about 2-3" in size each. I have a list of about 700 images to create. I am drawing them all in black and white line, with almost an engraved look. My questions are as follows: -In finding pictures of historical people, can I re-draw public domain images (such as Henry VIII) from a picture I find on the web? I would be taking a picture of the original art and drawing it myself in line form, as well as leaving out the background, possibly stopping it at the bust line, etc.. The images I draw will then be printed on cardstock and copyrighted (no image will be the exact same as the public domain image). These will be sold commercially. -Do I have to get permission for every public domain image I find? -I have found several pictures on the web of 3-dimentional objects, such as statues, coins, etc... Am I free to draw them? (eg. statue of Constantine, coin of Tiberius) -Does an image that is public domain but is on a website have to have permission from the webmaster for me to reference? If his/her site is copyrighted, does that not allow me access to the picture? -Finally, if I am able to do this, do you know of a way of finding public domain images that is free or inexpensive? I am in the process of finding a lawyer who can give me legal advice/documentation to protect myself and guide me in a legal manor of proceeding with this project. I'm finding the waters very murkey when I read different websites on this topic! Thank you in advance for your time and attention. Blessings,
