: last may i photographed antique documents in an overseas archive while i was on a university-sponsored research trip. i returned to the university and created a cd-rom of these documents. now the university wants to share copyright.
: 1. do i have to share copyright with my employing institution, since the cd-rom wasn't "for hire;" rather it was on my own--for my use and any other scholar (but i scanned the manuscript images using univ. equipment and laboratory);
: 2. do i have to worry about international copyright issues? i got a verbal o.k. from the director of the archive to make the photographs (the original authors are dead), but i'm wondering if i even have a "right" to copyright the cd-rom of manuscript images.

Dear Lynn,

There is the law and there is reality. The law has to be used in a realistic way also. There are many factors that have to be considered by you in privacy where the world can't see.
