Is this "appropriation" a violation of copyright laws or is there some way around it: ie. using only a certain percentage of a piece, or using it in another medium other than music, or is it always an out and out violation? Dear Rian, There are a lot of liberties taken with the copyright law which don't result in legal action. Authors'quotes of other books are often go further than they should. The generous use of footnotes giving a source usually avoids big problems. I judge, assessing damages for infringement would be very unsympathetic to the copyright owner unless there was a real abuse. M.
