Copyrights are registerable domestically. It is very tricky. A book published after 1909 might be still validly copyrighted in the US. Lots of questions to be answered. Before 1909 the chances or a present US copyright very small. The translation in the 20's, if renewed may still be in effect. The law in the US has recently extended copyright to life plus 70 years. The copyright law applies to websites. Steps must be taken to gain proper protection under the law.
