: : The editor (Alice Korach) of Bead & Button Magazine claims in their internet forum that one has only to change a piece of art work by 10% to claim a new copyright on the piece:

: Jeanette, I don't see anywhere in Alice Korach's post where she discusses making the changes in order to "claim a new copyright on a piece". She appears only to be discussing what would constitute the fabled 10% change, but not once suggests that one can then claim a new copyright.

: Alice Korach's post from the other site:
: "The question the courts have to deal with in a copyright infringement suit is: what, exactly, constitutes a 10% change. Probably just changing the color isn't enough. Perhaps changing color and adapting fringe to a different technique works, perhaps not. A lot depends on the quality of the lawyers and the predisposition of the judge if you go to court. But going to court is extremely expensive. Copyright is a thorny issue. Basically, the safe and ethical thing to do if you want to use someone else's piece as a jumping-off point is to change at least 4 (preferably more) things: beads, color, add a new element, remove an element from the original. This would likely result in way more than a 10% change because it would involve a lot of brain and design work. But isn't that what creativity is all about?"

Dear Mr. Montebello,

The odd are if you stick to a formula like 10% you are going to still be in trouble at some point.

If I represented the copyright holder, I think I could cream you fast.
