: I'm trying to find out the copyright laws pertaining to taking an existing song and doing a parody by changing the lyrics. Basically what Wierd Al Yankovic does. Is permission needed from the copyright holder or is this considered a parody that is exempt?
Dear C. Winn,
You can get a licence for the music if it has been recorded and played. Parodies are usually not infingements but one has to be careful.
