: : what is the process of getting my poems and songs copywritten? And how do I sell them?
: Dear C,
: The is no clear answer about selling. That is the most important part. If you find the market and have what the market wants it may not be hard.
: One big risk is that copyright covers a mode of expression not the idea. An author once came to be with a manuscript that had been show to a publisher.
: The publisher took the idea and had a sucessful book published. The author may have had a cause of action for unfair competition but could not afford the fee to fight.
: The copyright law protects the mode of expression of the creation, registration allows enforcement.
: West Side Story might not have been an infringement of Romeo and Juliet, if Shakespeare had a live copyright at the time.
