The poor man's copyright is generally described as the ridiculous idea that if you send yourself a letter and it remains unopened, that somehow, that fact proves that whatever is in the envelope was written as of a certain date in the past (as determined by the postage meter stamp). This is ludicrous for 2 reasons: The best way to protect a copyright is by registering it with the Copyright office. Registration provides for several legal benefits that are not available without it. (including International protection in dozens of Berne COnvention countries, availability of Federal COurt foruim and remdies -- and attorneys fees and statutory damages options for the copyright owner). Besides, considering the relatively affordable cost to copyright, trying to save a few pennies now, can cost you dearly on the back end.
