copyright words

My son has a book filled with songs he has written. I know they need to be protected via copyright. Some people presented him with a contract and they have some wording in it that defines them as the "employer".
If that makes my son a "work for hire", does that mean that even with his work copyright, he would not be considered the owner of the words and publishing rights of the words to his songs?

Also, I wanted to know more about ELAINE's Workshop - what does it entail, where is it held, how many days long, and what is the cost.

Thank you,
