: How long does a copywrite last? Dear Francis H. A copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. Registering is almost not as important as understanding the law. Find an Intellecutal Property lawyer you can trust. Even after checking to see if the lawyer has the highest rating (av) in Martindale-Hubbell you still have to know that you can rely on the person you choose. Some lawyers don't even make it into Martindale-Hubbell.
