: Thanks so much for your help! This one has always plagued me. Too bad, I really want to copy some CD's, oh well. Thanks again!! Dear Madam: Recording a television program for your later household viewing is not an infringement. Recording music from the radio or making a copy from a CD to tape (from a copy that you own) (for your own use) is not an infringement. Recording your friend's CD would be a technical infringement - although not an actionable one in a realistic court of law. Having your friend record their own CD onto a tape (for their own use) is not an infringement. Receiving the tape from a friend as a gift, though a technical "distribution" of an unauthorized copy would not make you morally or legally liable. If your friend were to sell you the used CD and you taped it for your own use - it would not be an infringement. If the world were filled with responsible and consicentious citizens like you, we attorneys would be out of a job.
