Copyright and Cover Art[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Copyright Forum ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Jonathan M. Rudder on February 27, 2001 at 13:53:30: Let's say someone publishes a novel and commissions an artist to create some cover art based on a scene from the book. Who gets the copyright for the cover art? Is it considered a "work for hire" and therefore the commissioner gets the copyright? Or if it's the artist, how does the copyright work (a copyrighted work by one person, based on copyrighted subject matter by another)? Thanks ahead of time for any assistance.
