A quick review of "Berne Convention" on the web tells me i'd lose that dime. So, the author is dead, his publisher is gone, I can't find any trace of his mission. Perhaps the next step is to track down his missionary order in Spain and, if it still exists, try to reach them for permission. : Many thanks for this web site and your help.
I don't want to mislead you nor do I want to do research without being paid. My understanding is that The Berne Convention may protect a work without a copyright notice. I believe that the US has adopted the Berne Convention, with some reservation. Now the Register of Copyrights says that in the United States all works prior to 1923 are public domain. The Berne convention, may provide world rights of life plus x years. A US copyright is now 95 years or life plus 70. You do the research and let me know. M. Arthur Auslander
