A Poor Man copyright may be a lot of different evils. Copyrights are not expensive. Canada and the US, I'm sure are both member, of the UCC and the Berne Convention.
The law is there. Registration is at least necessary to sue in the US. The protect is available without registration, but registration may also be required in Canada.
