: What's the first steps I need to take, in getting my songs and my band logo copywritten? I would like to have some help in know how to trust and where to go! Dear Mr. Berry, The copyright law effects what you create from the moment of creation. Registration enables enforment of the rights. There is compulsory licencing of music with royalities to the composer or composers. Band names are service marks. They have to be registered to maximize protection. They should be cleared by searching to see if the are not in conflict at the outset. Trademarks and service marks and copyrights are covered by national statues so that they can be dealt with nationally rether than as local law issues. If you don't pay much to a lawyer, you can wonder if he knows or can spend time to do it right. If you pay a lot you can't tell whether the lawyer is working for you or the fee. M. Arthur Auslander
