: The following is a two part question:

: Part 1
: Regarding "works made for hire". I am currently employed as a sales representative. At home,in my free time, I've created a program with my microsoft Excel software that is significantly helping me sell one of my product catagories. I was not hired to write computer programs for this company, nor am I allowed the time on the job to do so. Would I be the author of my creation, or would my company be the author?

: Part 2
: Can formulas with graphic illusrations that are specifically designed for a particular industry be copy right protected? For example: A leasing program created with Excel for figuring finacial information in order to expedite payment schedules for auto leases. Or a program with bar graph illustrations showing liquide measurements of different values.

Dear Mr. Innarelli,

I don't want to cast a sour note on what you are doing. It looks as if you are doing the right thing in the right way.

Life may not be as simple as it looks. I once had a client in a situation similar to yours, working for a large corporation.

When they found out what he was doing they gave him the choice of signing an agreement with them or being fired.
