: I would like to know who holds the copywrights to
: a novel and who I would need to get permission to
: copy the novel. The publisher or the author.
A search of the records of the Register of Copyrights will give a lead to the author, the publisher and the status of the copyright. The records may or may not include information as to who presently owns what rights. In fairness to the author, it might be best to check there first since there may be reverted or reversionable rights depending on the agreement with the publisher.
