Sermons & Inspirational Speaking

After much research through the US Copyright web site,
I still have some questions as to who, if anyone, holds
the copyright on a sermon or inspirational speech.

It is logical to think that the speaker would have the
copyright; however, most churches record the sermon and
resell copies of cassettes without affixing a copyright
notice. The speaker may not even know he was recorded.

Would the sermon or speech be covered as a sound recording
with the speaker retaining copyright, sound recording
with the church or organization retaining copyright, or
as a work commissioned by an employer (since the church
or organization requested and most likely paid the speaker)?
If the recording is subsequently transcribed, does the
speaker have the copyright to the written material?

Also, what if the recordings are old enough that any
copyright would have since expired? Is it then public
domain?

Any thoughts or input is appreciated.
