: Various websites exist on the internet where one can purchase videotapes of various old television programs.
: I assume that the seller of such videos must have permission in order to legally sell such videos.
: Here is my question:
: If one buys a video from a such a site (buying the video for private home viewing), could the buyer become either civilly or criminally liable if it is later found that the seller did not have the appropriate copyright authority to sell the video?
Just because a transaction is made over the net does not assure the underlying legality of the transaction.
Off the top of my head, there does not seem to be any likelihood of criminal liability where a purchase is innocent.
I'd have to research the law for liability of the purchaser. It certainly seems at worst limited and difficult to police.
