Dear Mike, Basically you own what you have not assigned. The context of the question is not clear. The law in the US is very similar to that in the UK. The ideas in copyright works are not protected, only the mode of expression. Patents may protect conceptual aspects. The law sets the timing for enforcement depending on what you have, what you have done and what others have done and how they have done it. The question is too abstract. M. Arthur Auslander
