copyright of photos in advertising

In traveling I have taken some photos of advertising
that contain photographs. I am concerned about the copyright
status of photos in ads since I am considering selling
some of these photos. I am operating under the assumption
that a photo put into say, a billboard, would not
be protected under copyright because it is something purposely
put out for public consumption. Otherwise any picture
taken of a city street that involved a billboard with
a photo would be infringing on copyright if it were
sold. Some of the the pictures were taken in other
countries, so I am wondering if there is any
international copyright law that governs this. Thanks for any help.
