Your poems are protected under the copyright law from the moment of creation. Registation emables enforcement against infringers.
If the poems are published the publisher usually take are of the registration. There should be a writtem agreement with the publisher. You should be certain that you are protected with the publisher. Unplublished copyrights can be registered. They are often a waste of money except in special situations. The official filing fee has recently gone up to #30.
